1870s - Evidence that the lake shores of Mainit were heavily forested

This 6 May 1878 missionary letter of Fr. Antonio Chambo, SJ written in Jabonga, Agusan to the Jesuit Mission Superior in Manila also documented the rich forest covers of the Surigao-Agusan mountain ranges including the shores of Lake Mainit.

In page 58, Fr. Chambo described:

“In this spot of Mindanao, mancono (magcono) grows so abundantly that these trees blanket the entire mountain range running from Surigao to Butuan, that is from north to south. Its hardness is similar to that of iron, such that it resists all tools, except in an expert’s hands. It has besides the advantage of not rotting in water, which is not true of other hardwoods of  great density like tiga, molave and narra. Although resistant for years to the action of water, they yield and rot in the end. Tiga is also found abundantly, wood similar to mancono for its hardness but which does not share its incorruptibility. On the lake shores facing the mountain, one finds molave, too. Red narra is found in profusion on the flat land around the lake, as well as balayon, tindalo, woods precious for their red color, softness, and suitability for all kinds of work. Such, in a word, is the wealth in woods so common here that they are not valued. elsewhere, they would be valued as treasure.”

Mainit Lake Shoreline Reforestation is an Environmental Management Intervention and Climate Change Mitigation priority project of Barangay Quezon, Mainit, Surigao del Norte, Philippines in partnership with Philippine Red Cross Surigao del Norte Chapter, PfR Netherlands Red Cross (2013) with support from Mainitnons who members of Mainit Dot Org (2006), Tambayayong Mainit, Inc (2009, 2012), and Mainitnon Gihapon- MG Yokers (2015)

Why trees are important?
“Trees provide oxygen, improve air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil and supporting wildlife. Trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen we breathe. Trees control climate by moderating the effects of the sun, rain and wind. Leaves absorb and filter the sun’s radiant energy, keeping things cool.”

Background
In late 1800’s, the lakeshore of Mainit were documented to be heavily forested with indigenous trees like Magcono, Hagashas, Toog, Ma-hogany, Bangkal, Bitan-ag (Arcilla). More than a hundred years later, no such forest exist anymore. With 28 river tributaries flowing into the lake and only one outlet in Kalinawan River, the lake experiences annual flooding especially during the rainy months of June to February. Locally known as guob, this annual phenomenon destroys millions of pesos worth of food supply from hundreds of hectares of riceland and rootcrops and displacement and diseases among hundreds of residents from 8 municipalities around the lake.

Goal
Massive tree planting drive to reforest the 62-kilometer shores of Lake Mainit starting from the Municipality of Mainit’s Panayakpan (Eastern) and Bitan-ag (Western) shores.

Evidence and Policy
1. Tree planting project experiments in Lake Mainit were conducted in 2006, 2009, 2013. Among those involved were Punong Barangay Gaudencio (Bebot) Mondano and the officials of Barangay Quezon, together with concerned Mainitnons from around the globe. These projects proved that both Bangkal (Nuclea orientalis) and Susot (Terminalia surigaensis Merr) trees are flood-resistant
(can survive long term flooding) and are suitable in lakeshore reforestation.

2. The heavily forested and beautiful lakeshore park of Lake Pinamaloy in Don Carlos, Bukidnon is among the successful experiences that proved the possibility of greening an entire lake. Grade 5 and 3rd year high school students were required by schools in Don Carlos to plant and take care 5-10 trees for at least a year as a requirement for graduation.

3. Presidential Decree 705, or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines, declares that among the areas needed for forest purposes are “strips of land at least twenty (20) meters wide facing lakes”. And in 2014, the Barangay Quezon Council passed a resolution in 2014 declaring the lakeshores of Lake Mainit as reforestation area.

Process

  1. Establish a barangay plant nursery.
  2. Conduct massive information awareness  campaign about the program. It may take some social issues since most of the river banks have been farmed already.
  3. Raise funds to maintain the nursery and the planting areas.
  4. Plant trees along the lakeshores targeting around 5 hectares a year.
  5. Ensure regular clear tending . 1st and 2nd year, 4 passes; 3rd year, 3 passes, and 4th year, 2 passes.

Immediate Results (1-6 years)

  • A barangay plant nursery is created and maintained.
  • Trees are planted and area maintained along the 10-kilometer shores of Barangay Quezon specifically the Eastern (Panayakpan) and the Western Shores (Bitan-ag).
  • A tourism ecological park (ecopark) is developed featuring areas for picnics, jogging and biking.
  • Increased awareness among residents on the importance of forests in the lake’s ecosystem.

Longterm Results (30 years)

  • The 62-kilometer shoreline of Lake Mainit is fully reforested and a tourist ecopark is being enjoyed by tourist, kids, and families.
  • Panayakpan and Bitan-ag forests are spawning area of lake fishes especially hayuan (mudfish).
  • Reestablish the  Biodiversity of the area and its ecological balance and the entire lake ecosystem.
  • The presence of the forest vegetation within the lake shorelines plays  a crucial role in the rise of water level.
  • Trees create economic opportunities.
  • Trees  as landmark can give a community a new identity and encourage civic pride.

2015.05.31 Global Surigaonons conduct tree planting for Lake Mainit shores reforestration

MAINIT, Surigao del Norte, June 1 (PIA) — Migrants and residents of Mainit, Surigao del Norte led by the online facebook group, Mainitnon Gihapon, in collaboration with the local government of Barangay Quezon, joined hands recently in planting more than 600 bangkal trees along the Bitan-ag area of Lake Mainit shore.

Members of Mainitnon Gihapon or MG are local and migrants Mainitnons from all over the world. Many have come home as far as Canada, North America, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, and Australia to join this year’s 2nd global reunion which included a support to the tree planting cause.

Several members of MG, even prior to its existence as a facebook group (founded Dec 2011) (http://pidjanga.blogspot.com/2011/12/mainitnon-gihapon-mg-facebook-group.html), have been strong supporters of the re-greening and reforestation efforts for the lake. This included support to the first ever tree planting efforts of the online group Mainit Dot Org (MDO) in 2006 with 300 bangkal trees planted, followed by Tambayayong Mainit, Inc. (TMI) in 2009 and 2012 (600 bangkal and susot trees), all on the eastern side of the lake shore called Panayakpan.

Incumbent barangay captain and a tree enthusiast Gaudencio Mondano, who has extensive experience on reforestation in Papua New Guinea, pushed the lake shore reforestation as one of the barangay’s top priority development agenda. The barangay named this as the Panayakpan Ecopark project.

With a convincing proposal, and armed with evidence from the previous tree planting experiments that both bangkal and susot trees are guob-resitant which means they can survive in long term flooding, the Philippine Red Cross granted a P300,000 seed fund for the establishment of a barangay nursery and planting of additional trees. By end of 2014, the barangay has planted almost a thousand trees spanning around two kilometers of lake shore from Barangay Quezon to the neighboring Barangay Mabini.

The MG-led tree planting this year covers the western portion of the lake going to Barangay San Isidro. A total of 625 bangkal trees were planted spanning around 1.5 kilometers of lakeshore.

“With its capacity to hold water of up to 40 liters a day, a throng of fully grown bangkal trees has a potential to help mitigate the effects of the dreaded annual lake flooding,” said Mondano.

“I am so happy to be back home after several years of living abroad. I am so excited to be of help,” shared Crispo Salino, an MG member based in Canada who also joined the activity.

“This has always been among my advocacies. My dream is to see one day that the 62-kilometer shoreline of Lake Mainit will be fully reforested so that our children, grandchildren and their grandchildren would enjoy the beauty of the ecopark. It is my prayer that with the joint efforts of Mainitnons and Surigaonons, we will be able to see again the beautiful lakeshore forest which existed in this very lake a century ago,” expressed Manila-based MG member and Pidjanga blogger (www.pidjanga.blogspot.com) Zimmbodilion Peter Mosende who was also among the force behind the successful tree planting projects of MDO and TMI since 2006.

Members of Mainitnon Gihapon have suggested that this project be sustained in the coming years with the hope that fellow Mainitnons will realize the importance of trees in the lake’s ecosystem, and the neighboring lakeshore towns will replicate barangay Quezon's success.
